The Surface Pattern Design Guide cover artist!

Hello Reader,

An update on the next issue (#65, April-May-June)

The next issue is a bit behind schedule at my printer. It is in the bindery today. The mailing data, labels and mailers are ready to go, but it won't likely be entered into the postal service until the end of the week. This is about a week behind where it should have been, for reasons outside my control. My apologies for the delay—you all know how much I like to keep things on track. Thank you for your patience.

Good things are worth the wait. Here's a preview of what's coming your way!

The 6th edition UPPERCASE Surface Pattern Design Guide is within this issue. I am pleased to share the SPDG6 cover artist today:

After reviewing a few thousand images for this guide, Lisa Deighan’s entry stood out for her hands-on approach to surface pattern. Using a tjanting, a Javanese batik tool, Lisa applies melted wax outlines to silk stretched over a handmade wooden frame. Painting with inks and dyes onto the unwaxed areas, she creates bright, flowing colour washes and patterns. The wax resist leaves her outlines intact, the previous layer shining through.

“Usually my most loved batiks are the unplanned ones,” says Lisa. “The beauty of using melted wax resist and fluid inks on silk is that the medium itself often makes the decisions for me—and in turn inspires my next mark making, as I literally go with the flow. It’s such an organic and mindful way of making art. I can start with a sketchy idea of motifs, layout and colour palette, but ultimately the final piece is
always a welcome surprise." @lisadeighan
