Stencils in Craft, Art & Design

Blackbird by Laura Lacroix "I love using stencils in my acrylic paintings. I use them in the underpainting as a base for the work. I use geli plate prints that have been made with stencils as collage pieces in the work. I have amassed a pretty large collection of bought stencils, but I also cut my own."
Kathryn Lissack "Stencils are magical to me because they can distill communication down to the basic essentials. I find this impressive since I’m more of a maximalist. In my textured collages, stencils sometimes play the heroes, and sometimes they are the glue. I push poly-fill through hard plastic stencils, distress and manipulate paint within stencil shapes, and incorporate repetitive pattern stencils to unite disparate collage elements. Occasionally, I make my own stencils. Simply put, stencils add a graphic accent that resonates with my aesthetic. And I love them."
Black & White
Share your black & white artwork, projects and designs, where the lack of colour is a specific design feature. → Submission Form
Tina Armando "Night Owl is a linocut print of a Barred Owl. I chose to use black ink only to represent this nocturnal friend in their preferred environment-the woods at night. I carved lines of different values for relief printing, which print as white lines that together portray moonlight reflecting off the owl. For example, I used thicker lines purposefully carved along the higher tilted side of the owl’s head. By keeping this a black and white only piece, I aimed to highlight the nocturnal nature of the Barred Owl."
Miranda Millward "The limitation of using a strict black and white palette is strangely freeing. Even disparate fragments become cohesive, appearing to be more imbued with nostalgia, memory and the past." (Miranda is one of 46 featured collage and assemblage artists in my forthcoming book, Glue.)
GLUE
I have finished all 46 profiles and their first pass at page design!!!!!!! In the next few weeks, my copy editor will review the text while I make the final refinements on the design and prepare the images for printing (I do a lot of prepress work, ensuring that everyone's photos and artwork look their very best). It will go to print in August and will be released in September. Pre-order the book here.

The UPPERCASE Archive & re:issue
re:issue collects articles from my archive of back issues and republishes them online. It's a great way to access ideas from old issues—plus you get access to the digital archive (I've got all issues from #1 through #37 posted so far!)
Lines can be straight, or they can squiggle. They can start and end, or go on for infinity.
This month, I will be sharing content from past issues that is inspired directly or indirectly by lines, stripes, ledgers, horizons, linotype, rulers, alignment and throughlines.
The UPPERCASE Archive is a growing resource of out-of-print UPPERCASE magazine back issues presented as digital flip-through editions. With over 50 out-of-print issues, there’s an incredible abundance of inspiration available in this digital UPPERCASE library. The first 37 issues are available, with more added weekly.
