The new issue is out and about!*

Thank you for sharing photos and reels and stories of it on Instagram and YouTube and talking about the magazine with your friends. I so appreciate your posts! Not only does it make me feel good as the designer/creator of this magazine to see it out in the world, but it helps the magazine tremendously to find new, kindred spirits who might decide to subscribe.

By the time you're holding a new issue, I'm immersed in creating the next one. I always feel that I fall short in promoting a new issue because my time is necessarily focused on the upcoming issue. My brain space and attention have already shifted to the next issue that is forming in my mind and on my desktop.

That's why I am grateful for your promotional assistance and so fortunate that I can hop on social media and reshare your kind words and pretty images of the latest issue. As a one-woman operation, you're the marketing team that I don't have. And you're simply the best. Enthusiastic, genuine, generous and creative!

I've been thinking a lot about how and when I create my publications lately. For my Encyclopedia series, it always seems that the deadline to send a book to print falls in the summer months, which means working through heat waves or what should be summer holidays. (A holiday? What's that?) The simple reason is that I typically announce a new book late in the year, and an Encyclopedia volume takes around nine months, so, like the Glue book that I'm working on now, that means finishing it up in July/August, followed by a month of print production, and then released in September. For my next volume, I should announce it in the summer, and work on it during the dead of winter! Something to ponder... But time off, too.

However, I always have a looming deadline. With a quarterly magazine, that's how it is! Issue #67 goes to print next month.

In the early days of the magazine, I used to feel stressed about the schedule. After some time, I realized that these deadlines weren't a constraint that should create anxiety; rather, they are the primary feature of publishing a magazine.

Consistency, schedules, and planning—all of this alleviates stress. They work for me, not against me.

If you've been feeling stressed by all the chaos lately, try giving yourself a gentle container for your time and attention. Set a creative goal, finish something you already started, or begin anew.


ISSUE 66 mailing update

*Subscriber copies were mailed in late June. There may be delivery delays due to postal disruptions, weather events, etc. Check with your local postal service for reported delays. Southern US states have been taking longer than previously with USPS. Please be in touch at the end of the month if you have not received your copy of #66 (tulip cover). Readers overseas can expect 3-8 weeks from dispatch.

So much progress!

Prepress on hundreds of images has been completed, and all but 7 of the 448 pages are designed.

This book will go to print in August and will be released in September.

The UPPERCASE Archive & re:issue

re:issue collects articles from my archive of back issues and republishes them online. It's a great way to access ideas from old issues—plus you get access to the digital archive (I've got all issues from #1 through #37 posted so far!)

Lines can be straight, or they can squiggle. They can start and end, or go on for infinity. This month, I will be sharing content from past issues that is inspired directly or indirectly by lines, stripes, ledgers, horizons, linotype, rulers, alignment and throughlines.
