Fresh produce!

Hello Reader,

More than just magazines and books are being produced at UPPERCASE headquarters...

This year, I have veggies!

These photos are from a couple of weeks ago; now everything is looking bedraggled and at the end of its season.

But now I have good things to eat!

I've been imagining that I should get a basket to transport the produce home. Something that Anne of Green Gables would use to gather flowers from a field or collect eggs from the hens. And guess what I found on my walk yesterday? The perfect metal basket just waiting for me in the alley a few blocks from here.

I've been percolating the themes for issue #68. I'll share more soon! It's an exciting one and very topical to this collective moment. Here at UPPERCASE, good things are growing inside and out.

Time for Creativity

Now that September is here, it is time to get into a new routine. This is the first school year in four years that I'm not in charge of teaching algebra, science and language arts—Finley is enrolled in an online high school for grade 10. We've loved homeschooling, but now he needs to earn credits towards a diploma. And it will be good for him to have teachers dedicated to each of these subjects!

This also means that I might have a bit more time in my week? (note that question mark, ha!) I'm determined not to fill it up with more administrative work. I am going to do hands-on creativity, get back to art-making and music, too. I have ideas of how I'd like to share this activity with my kindred spirits over in the UPPERCASE Circle, both to make myself accountable for it, but also to encourage you to take time for creativity, too.

❤️

Thank you for all your kind responses to last week's story about my Doukhobor ancestors. (Read it here. View the archive of my past newsletters here.)

Take care.
Be gentle and stay strong.

UPPERCASE issue 67 (Oct-Nov-Dec)

Well, it's a good thing I added padding to the schedule because production of issue #67 has been delayed due to "various reasons" at the printer. Which means I have another week before I have to generate the mailing list.

Please make your subscription address change, or purchase a subscription or renewal for the next issue, #67 (Oct-Nov-Dec issue), this week. This newsletter is sent to a general list—it is not segmented based on any purchases you may have made in my shop. You can use your email address to log in to my webshop to view your past purchases.

Use the code 'keepgoing' for a discount (CA$10) on subscriptions and renewals.

Issue #67 is the October-November-December issue, so don't expect it until later in September or early October!

Shipping to the USA

My goods have been cleared by the broker to be CUSMA-compliant, so there shouldn't be tariffs on them. I still have to pay a per-parcel brokerage fee to clear the items at the border, though. The pricing that American customers see on my webshop for books is now dynamic, fluctuating with the currency exchange rate plus a percentage to account for brokerage fees. I will adjust this as I know more. For now, subscriptions and back issue prices remain the same.

However, since last week, when the de minimis exemption ended, the technology that my shipper uses to generate US-destined shipping labels has been non-functional due to API errors. (If it is not one thing, it's another!) If you've placed an order for an in-stock book or back issue, you will receive a shipping notice once it leaves the warehouse.

UPPERCASE items destined to the USA are still sent via USPS—they are gathered en masse and trucked across the border, where they are then put into the United States Postal Service.

Subscriptions keep UPPERCASE going for 67 issues and counting. Subscriptions and renewals starting with #67 placed this week will be mailed directly from my printer—this is the most economical method for me to send you a magazine, and it's also the most environmentally efficient. Thank you.

With back-to-school, we can expect transmission to increase. Wear a respirator!!!!
It's a simple device that will keep you safe from COVID (and also the horrible wildfire smoke that is blanketing Calgary, too). Why breathe it in when you don't have to?
