The Pattern Journal

Hello Reader,

Oops, I think the entire month of October went by without a Pattern Journal! I've been busy with the release of the Glue book (all about collage) and getting the forthcoming issue of UPPERCASE magazine to the printer.

If you're not yet a paid subscriber to UPPERCASE magazine, I'd love for you to join us. The code take15 gives CA$15 off on subscriptions, renewals and gift subscriptions. (You can consider this a "Black Friday" deal—this is the largest discount on subscriptions this year.)

The print magazine's subscriber base has been slowly declining in recent years; I'm trying to boost subscription rates now to ensure a healthy 2026. The magazine is 100% supported by readers: no advertising, no sponsorships, no government grants. That's why subscriptions and renewals are so important. Get your subscription order in before Monday to be on the mailing list for the next issue. Thank you!

If you want to see some previews of the upcoming issue, I shared some earlier in the week.

Thank you for your support!

Deco Dawn Bouquet
by Freda Lilly

Deco Dawn Bouquet is a soft, nostalgic surface pattern inspired by early-morning light and the quiet optimism that comes with a new day. This design blends gentle Art Deco curves with vintage floral motifs, using warm peach, rose, and muted gold to create a feeling of calm elegance. I wanted to capture that moment when sunlight first touches a room, making everything feel a little softer and more hopeful. My work sits between illustration and textile storytelling, where each pattern feels like a small world of its own. Deco Dawn Bouquet is part of my upcoming Spring 2026 collection, designed to bring warmth and emotional comfort into modern interiors. Through colour, texture, and narrative details, I aim to create artwork that feels uplifting, familiar, and quietly magical. Something that can transform a space without overwhelming it. Created In Moonlight
by Cynthia Iannaccone

I enjoy creating patterns that repeat, especially with flowers, animals, nature, or anything organic. Most of my work consists of illustration for children's picture books. It’s inside the picture book where I fell in love with end pages. Picture book end pages often have patterns that repeat and relate somehow to the story inside. This is where I learned to create end page patterns. On my website, the flower portfolio has examples of these repeating patterns created digitally in Procreate. Instagram / Website

Botanical Patterns
by Josie George

I am a full-time artist devoted to exploring the delicate dialogue between nature and emotion. My work primarily focuses on botanical forms, where I seek to capture the quiet poetry of petals, leaves, and stems, each brushstroke an ode to organic beauty and fragility. Through my art and patterns, I hope to invite moments of stillness, reflection, and connection. Instagram / Website

Issue #67

The Oct-Nov-Dec issue is all about black-and-white artwork, stencils, and making amazing art with "empty" spaces.
