In the best ways, subscribing to a print magazine is a romantic, old-fashioned thing to do.
Funds are pledged to something you haven't seen, to be released over the course of a year. You invest in putting ink on paper. You spend time anticipating the arrival of each new issue, to be delivered by a human being who walks around your neighbourhood dropping off printed paper materials. You receive a 132-page publication filled with content curated by an editor months earlier. Disconnected from any digital technology, the magazine waits for you. Quiet, beautiful, unchanging.
Sounds lovely, doesn't it?
But these days, it's also a sort of ridiculous business model. Given the challenges, I would not start a print subscription business in 2026.
It's a good thing, then, that I started publishing UPPERCASE magazine seventeen years ago. And my determination to keep going is as strong as ever.
Instagram, the iPad, the ubiquity of the iPhone and other 'smart' devices and now 'artificial intelligence' have all become mainstream since I released my inaugural issue in April 2009. Many, many times, the media has declared "print is dead!" for one reason or another.
Print is not dead.
Print is read.
The printed word matters. It holds your attention. It has staying power.
I am grateful to you, my loyal readers, who appreciate the value of print!
ps There are 4 times more people on this newsletter list than UPPERCASE has print subscribers—if you're one of these people who has never held a subscription, I invite you to join us as a supporting subscriber and member of the UPPERCASE Circle. Use the code take15 for $15 (Canadian dollars) off a subscription or renewal. (The code expires January 31st.)
