tick-tock

Dear Reader,

For now, this is all I can show you of my progress on the next UPPERCASE. I'm busy designing, editing and finessing. I'm within the final stretch!

Issue #69 (April-May-June) goes to the printer on Friday.

This issue marks 17 years of UPPERCASE magazine!!!

Speaking of upcoming birthdays, my son Finley has one coming up next month. I have an idea for a present: it's old-fashioned and experiential, and I think it could be surprising and fun!

Among Finley's many interests is train and public transit ephemera (train timetables, transit stubs, bus tickets and passes, postcards, rail maps... that sort of thing). He has the start of a collection, mostly local items he's found—an exciting find was a transit stub from Warsaw that we found on the ground while walking in a park here in Calgary. If you're a transit rider and have an old bus pass, transfer ticket or other such contemporary or vintage ephemera from your town or travels, would you like to send it to him?

He would enjoy receiving mail containing these curious paper items—especially since transit tickets and subway cards are becoming obsolete, replaced by codes on our digital devices.

Many thanks!

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

Long-time readers might recall issue #28 from a decade ago—it featured a collection of old Milwaukee bus passes (collection of Kindra Murphy). This issue is available in the UPPERCASE Archive.

Learn a new skill and grow your business!

UPPERCASE is an affiliate for the following courses. I've taken Bonnie Christine's Immersion course to update my Adobe Illustrator skills (and I'm returning as an alumnus again this year to see her newly filmed documentary-style course). I've returned often to Marie Forleo's B-School for over a decade.

Bonnie's Print & Pattern Revival starts tomorrow!

Print & Pattern Revival with Bonnie Christine is a free 4-day workshop introduction to a career in surface pattern design, running February 11–17. Here's the link to register for the Print & Pattern Revival. (I'm an affiliate partner for Bonnie's Immersion program again this year. Get on the waitlist; Immersion enrollment opens February 17.)

Free training from Marie Forleo: sign up here. (I am an affiliate for B-School 2026: enrollment is open Feb 12–20.)

Community

Lena Hunsicker is included in the current issue #68. I love the joyful artwork she contributed to the Elements of Illustration open call. "I chose air, because the special quality of the air when I’m working into the night is so inspiring." See the finished piece on her Instagram and inside this issue.

Surface designer Julee Wood finds lots of inspiration in each issue of UPPERCASE. She writes, "This month I spent a bit of time to myself and read it cover to cover. I knew I’d want to go back and re-read many articles. Most of the time, I skim and go back later. This time I read with intention and cut up the postcard to mark my favourites."

100% of sales from Little U are donated to UNICEF for humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Support the No More Loopholes Act to stop unregulated arms components from going from Canada to the US and then onward. February 17 is a day of action. Also, let's keep ICE out of Canada: sign this and this.
