Just a short newsletter today. Yesterday, I got the second round of my shingles vaccine (very worthwhile—getting this vaccine significantly lowers your risk of dementia). This morning, I was at the orthodontist with my son—his braces are off, hooray! We celebrated with poutine for lunch. This afternoon, I really needed a nap... and I slept until 4:30. oops! Sometimes a nap is the most productive thing you can do.
This past week, I have been working on UPPERCASE #70, nearly 20 pages designed so far. This issue goes to the printer later in May and will be out in July. I can't share much yet, so here's a teaser image from Joy Vanides Deneen below, showcasing her skillful calligraphy as part of her article exploring the notion of "practice makes perfect" in calligraphy and lettering.
The Jot book auditions are open for a few more days, closing at 5pm MDT on May 1st. Thank you for your pre-orders of this next volume in the UPPERCASE Encyclopedia of Inspiration.
I am seeking submissions for inclusion in Sketchbooks, Creative Careers and Make it Worthwhile: preferably ones that touch on the themes of this issue: circles and interpretations of the idea "practice makes perfect." Submit before April 30 to be considered for issue #70.
The current UPPERCASE is #69 (April-May-June). Its themes are "the creative self" and "texture." Look inside this issue here.
SAVE $10 on a subscription or renewal
Use the code creativeself for $10 off subscriptions and renewals. Good news: I've installed a new app, so this discount is $10 Canadian dollars if you're in Canada and $10 US dollars if you're in the USA. Nice! (Other locations, currency conversion will take care of it for you, based on CA$.) Discount codes cannot be retroactively applied to previous purchases.
Making Zen is on now! This online event is always a favourite with UPPERCASE readers: Making Zen features 40 expert artists sharing their handmade craft techniques and mindful stitching ideas. It's free to sign up—you have access to each day's sessions of videos for 24 hours, or you can invest in a VIP ticket to retain access to the recordings to watch at your leisure (plus other bonuses).
UPPERCASE is a media partner for Making Zen and earns a commission on sales resulting from these links. Thank you.
