I'm waiting for the printer proofs for the next issue, so in the meantime, here are some screenshots to give you a small teaser of what's coming...

Last call to start a subscription with issue #68 (Jan-Feb-March). You'll be sent issues #68 and #69 together now, with issue #70 to be mailed in late June (July-Aug-Sept) and then issue #71 this fall (Oct-Nov-December).
Last week, the electrical system at my office had to be upgraded, so the power was off for the day. I had the perfect activity to keep me busy: preparing the paper goodies that I'm sending to the Book Patrons. Thank you to the thirteen generous folk who have signed up to be Book Patrons for Jot! (If you'd like to become a Book Patron, you'll receive up to 4 complimentary copies of the book, a selection of paper goodies from UPPERCASE's archives and some other perks.)
I used stationery from Parcel, who was featured on the cover of UPPERCASE #63.
It took four solid days to go through the 210 submissions to the Jot! book auditions. I've done a preliminary sort, tagging the kind of submission (sketchbook, journalling, art-making, etc) and its content focus (for example: conceptualization, documentation, doodles, experiential, personal archive, listmaking, emotional/therapeutic, writing/poetry, etc), as well as ranking submissions (β through β β β β β based on the quality of the imagery, description by the submitter and how closely it suits the book themes).
I was excited to see that quite a few people on my content wish list also auditioned before I had a chance to extend invitations! That's a great "proof of concept" that the project description has captured what I had in mind.
My next step is to consider the book's content arc more exactly and figure out how I will communicate the themes and topics I want to cover: through profiles, personal essays, articles, sidebars, etc. I will then curate the profiled artists and content from both the auditions and my own list of inspiration and ideas I've been collecting for many years. This is the hardest part! Up to now, it has been wide, wide open. Now it is the filtering, whittling and honing phase. Assigning page counts to ideas. I find this the most difficult because it is a process of exclusion. The decisions I make at this stage determine the direction of the content to be published.
β
All that to say that, if you auditionedβthank you!βand please be patient to hear from me. Everyone will be notified about the status of their submission once decisions have been made.
I'm getting the details together for the mail-in "postal participation" aspect of the book. I will send that out as a separate email soon.
