Hot off the press!

Dear Reader,

I just received bound preview copies of the next UPPERCASE (#71 Oct-Nov-Dec) this morning, so I wanted to share them right away.

It's also the last day of August—the perfect day to make plans for cozying up with a gorgeous magazine come October!

Subscriber mailing data will be finalized in just a few days, so please subscribe, renew or give a gift subscription by September 2.

Being on the subscriber mailing list is the most efficient way to get each new issue—it is mailed directly from the printer to you in a kraft envelope and you'll get the personalized subscriber letter/bookmark that also doubles as collage paper. Here's the design:

Although I can still send subscriptions made after the mailing list cutoff, they are sent from a fulfillment warehouse. The warehouse receives inventory later, and they are more expensive for me to use. The cost for the fulfillment company to pick and pack each item is nearly three times what it costs at my printer. And since the fulfillment company ships each item individually as parcels, the postage cost is considerably higher per package than when I send 1000s of magazines at one time through the postal system. (Also of note: customers outside of North America may have to pay customs to receive their parcel, whereas there are no customs when a single copy is mailed directly from my printer.)

However, these absorbed costs have been increasing year over year, so I may have to add the parcel cost to subscription orders handled by the fulfillment company rather than my printer. This would hopefully encourage timely subscriptions in advance of each new issue—there would be no price increase, since both the subscriber and my business would economize on shipping costs. I'm still figuring out the math and logistics, but consider this an advance notice that shipping costs will eventually be added to subscriptions and renewals made after an issue has already been mailed from the printer.

Thank you to artist and illustrator Helen Cann for this fabulous cover! If you want a sneak peek inside issue 71, I posted a quick video.

Being a subscriber not only supports the magazine in a practical way, but it also gives you something to look forward to! Isn't it nice to know that there will be a lovingly made magazine coming your way every few months?

Looking forward to future issues... I've got a new open call up for issue #72 (January-Feb-March 2027); the themes are fragile / delicate / ethereal / glass / transparency. Later this fall, it will be time to open entries for the next Surface Pattern Design Guide, which will be published in issue #73 (April-May-June 2027). Environmentally minded and hands-on surface pattern creation will be prominent themes.

Send in your ideas and article pitches! I welcome your ideas and suggestions any time.
