Truth in the making

Dear Reader,

With AI stealing our written works and visual art to feed large language models and output AI-generated images, it is becoming harder and harder to know what's true. Genuine. Authentic. Human-made.

Making art and craft and being creative—without any digital or technological mediation—is something we dearly need to hold on to.

How do you explore your art/craft and express your creativity in a way that is completely authentic to you?

How are you expressing your truth and individuality?

How are you discovering the truth of who you are by making art or creating something by hand?

What is the truth in your making?

This is the new open call for UPPERCASE #72 (Jan-Feb-March 2027).

Also open for submissions is: fragile / delicate / ethereal / glass / transparency for which I'm looking for creative projects and artwork that have one or all of these traits. (I'd love to see glass, stained glass, translucent porcelain and fabrics, delicate handmade objects...)

Jot book progress update

I'm deep into writing the Jot book! This past week, I've made more really good process on writing the profiles.

The essays are more complex, but I'm forging ahead there, too.

If you auditioned for the jot book many months ago and are still waiting to hear back... I haven't contacted everyone yet because I haven't made all the final decisions. (The old saying, "no news is good news!") Over 200 submissions were sent in and many were excellent, so I am trying to incorporate as much as I can as I write the essays. Not as full profiles, but through quotes, anecdotes, sidebars and some imagery. Thus, the book is far more complex than I originally planned, and it is taking a while! But more creatives will be represented overall, which is in keeping with the encyclopedic nature of this book series.

I'm right in the middle of the 3 months of writing, editing, graphic design and getting ready to hand off the text to my copy editor.

Finished books by December? Some days this timeline feels possible, sometimes not! There are quite a few individuals and businesses who agreed to a profile who have not completed their questionnaires, even after repeated prompting by me and promises by them. Plus, as I described, other aspects of the book are more complicated than originally envisioned.

Deadlines help me get things done, so I am still striving for the book to go into print production in November. If I have to change the publication date, I will let you know. Either way, thank you for your auditions, eagerness and all-round support of my UPPERCASE publishing adventures!
