Let the design marathon begin!

Dear Reader,

Today, relieved that Alberta voted to remain a province of Canada, I unplugged from everything except for the page design program on my computer. It's time to concentrate on the next issue of UPPERCASE magazine! The two-week marathon of designing another issue has begun!

From my perspective, it's the last issue of the year. I have to design it and get it to the printer for early November so it will be ready for mailing in early to mid-December. From your perspective, it's the first issue of next year, issue #72, Jan-Feb-March 2027.

The first step is getting all the text and images onto the pages. All of the files get dumped into pages allocated in my editorial plan. Once in InDesign, I can see all the content and images together for the first time. I make adjustments—sometimes an article needs more pages than anticipated, other times, I need to accommodate more reader submissions. At this stage, it is fairly fluid and feels scattered and disorganized. With each decision I take, it gets more and more organized and more focused.

Once I've got all the content on the pages, I start on page design. I typically pick a few easy pages first; ones that have standard design formats or are short 2-page articles... this is a good way to get back into the flow of design. Once my brain is tricked into thinking, "Hey, this is easy," I switch over to the most challenging sections, such as the reader submissions. These are a big puzzle because the submissions vary from each other so much. It is my job to make them feel cohesive and set everyone's work up in the best light. These pages usually take a few full days to design, but once they've come together they set me up with good momentum for the next article, and then the one after that...

Design is basically a series of small choices that bring the images and ideas into a focussed, organized and visually pleasant experience!

fundraising for gaza

Since October 2023, UPPERCASE has been donating 100% of the sales of Little U to UNICEF Canada's humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Thanks to your generosity, $37,000 has been raised with $1,350 in the last three months. Any sales of Little U will be added to my next donation, scheduled for November 1st. I'd love for you to be a part of it. 🕊️ ❤️

100% of sales from Little U are donated to UNICEF for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
