All about YOU

Hello Reader and happy weekend.

We've gone on two Jane's Walk events in the past two days, and my knees are so tired! But it is a great way of seeing the city with enthusiastic guides and citizens.

Here's the latest "All About YOU"! Thank you for all your flurry of submissions with the May 1st deadline; I am going through them and will be diving into the design of issue #66 this week.

Take care,

Making Zen was a popular online event with UPPERCASE readers last year. I am happy to say that there's another retreat happening later this month. There's another fine roster of presenters—many of whom are UPPERCASE readers! To sign up for your free ticket, click here.

UPPERCASE readers are all so talented, and I'd love for you to be able to make connections with fellow readers through this newsletter. Share the things you make and the things you love. Submissions to All About YOU are always open!

Some recent "Fresh" submissions

The garden window
Hannah Hollowed

When I first graduated with my illustration degree in 2016, I had neither the confidence nor the soft business skills to launch a freelance career. Of course, being young and bereft of self-belief, as many young people are, I blamed myself. I assumed that if I weren't ready to do this straight out of uni, then I would never be ready, because surely my expensive university degree had given me as much information as anyone possibly could. Almost ten years later, I have been wiser by time, life experience, and personal tragedies, and I can see that it could be possible for me to fulfil that dream one day after all. I have come in and out of my love with art many times; it has hurt and healed me, but after all that struggle, I finally feel ready to have an earnest go at a freelance art career, warts, social media and all. I have been holding a pencil on and off my whole life, but the self-belief that this is something I can do is very fresh to me, as is my newer work to the world. I aspire to create decorative illustration on a commercial level, get paid to do what I love, and earn enough money to pay the gas bill and buy all the treats my dog deserves through work I truly enjoy. Binamade Ceramics
Nadine San Pedro

It's a pleasure to meet you; I am Nadine, though you can call me "Bina," a blend of Bianca and Nadine. As a Filipina-American ceramic artist, I founded Binamade, a small-batch ceramics company in Los Angeles, to bring joy and beauty to everyday life.

Binamade mainly seeks to understand the important link between diverse cultures, extraordinary artistry and genuine sustainability. My deeply meaningful Filipino heritage considerably influences many aspects of my original work and this heritage inspires me to skillfully blend a large amount of customary craftsmanship with a distinctly modern aesthetic. The mindfulness I put into each piece makes my handcrafted items special.

I stress the primary importance of practicality and aesthetic excellence in my "fresh" approach to ceramics. I imagine my work becoming commonplace items, used for simple joys such as enjoying coffee from a handcrafted mug or arranging flowers in a special vase. I hope my hard work will bring several meaningful connections, a meaningful degree of creativity and large joy to others.

The UPPERCASE Archive & re:issue

re:issue collects articles from past issues and brings them back to our attention in a new way. This month, we have "edges" as our working theme—ruffled, ruched, scalloped, perforated, wavy and otherwise decorative edges! We're sharing the art, stationery, books, fashion, textiles and more creative things featured in UPPERCASE magazine over the years that touch on this theme in direct and zig-zagging ways.
The UPPERCASE Archive is a growing resource of out-of-print UPPERCASE magazine back issues presented as digital flip-through editions. With over 50 out-of-print issues, there’s an incredible abundance of inspiration available in this digital UPPERCASE library. The first 30 issues of the magazine are ready now.
