Hello Reader,
I know it feels early to be talking about an issue that doesn't come out until October, but actually, this issue is at the printer already!
Sending a print magazine through the postal system has always been challenging, but particularly so in the past year. Labour disruptions at Canada Post, the overall downgrading of postal standards pretty much everywhere and climate-related weather delays have all increased the time it can take for a magazine to get through the postal system and arrive with eager readers.
To offset these delays, I've been adjusting my editorial schedule to get this issue and subsequent ones into production many weeks sooner.
And that's why I'm already gathering address changes, subscriptions and renewals for the Oct-Nov-Dec issue!

thank you!
TRUMP TARIFFS UPDATE
As for sending my books and magazines from Canada to the USA, printed information materials have been thankfully exempt from Trump tariffs. My Canadian-made print materials are also compliant with CUSMA (Canada-US-Mexico Trade Agreement). Trump has repeatedly shown, however, that he does not respect existing trade agreements (even ones that he signed!)
The upcoming removal of the de minimis exemption on August 29 may increase the level of difficulty in sending large volumes of anything across the border. Per my fulfillment partner: "De minimis allows packages under $800 USD in value to pass through US customs without a formal entry, which shortens the clearance process, and also makes it so the package passes through duty-free."
For example, when a new issue is ready to ship, Americans' subscriber copies are labelled, and USPS postage is purchased and applied here in Canada. Then they're all trucked across the border to be placed into USPS. We're talking nearly 5,000 copies of the magazine. Similarly, US-destined orders purchased in my online shop are consolidated daily by my fulfillment partner and then transported across the border.
My fulfillment partners are working with carriers in advance of the de minimis change. "Usually this has to be filed per shipment, but we will be able to set up a blanket CUSMA that covers all goods made in the countries within the trade agreement to enter duty-free."
So, in theory, American customers can still shop from UPPERCASE without any tariffs due upon delivery. Still, I think it is safe to say that there will be confusion and shipments might take longer.
Alright, with those logistics out of the way for now, let's look at the next issue—it is worth all the effort, I can assure you!
Here are a few pages of Pauline Greuell's 8-page feature about stencils and pattern-making.
The black and white reader submissions section is terrific. Here's a small sampling... (FYI, this morning, I sent out acceptance and decline emails for the b+w and stencil submissions.)
Love this article about Haida carver Melanie Russ, by Claire Dibble:
❤️ My thanks to all the amazing readers who keep coming back to UPPERCASE magazine, issue after issue, year after year!
Issue #67 is the October-November-December issue, so don't expect it until later in September!
Subscriptions and purchases of back issues, keep UPPERCASE going for 67 issues and counting. Thank you for your support.
